Tianamen square.
Tianamen has been a gathering place since the imperial times, but it is Mao's creation. It is a paved square and the largest in the world. Mao reviewed parades of up to a million people here. When he died in 1976 a million was gathered to show their last respect.
Most people remember the square from the PLA tanks and soldiers cutting down pro democracy demonstrators in 1989.
Today it's quite peaceful. Lots of kites are in the air from early morning to late afternoon. In the square you'll find the "Maosoleum", build by Mao before he died. Inside you can see him lying in an exhibition case. It is one of the only things in Beijing where there is no entrance fee, but the plastic flowers you can buy outside, is quite expensive.
The buildings in the background are the Forbidden City.
