Church of Santa Maria de la Alhambra

The Church of Santa Maria de la Alhambra was completed in the early seventeenth century on the site of the Great Mosque and its adjoining bathroom, this one partially preserved in the house where the musician Angel Barrios was born and raised, today is a Museum reminiscent of his figure and the intellectual atmosphere of the first third of the twentieth century.

The constructions of the temple were made between 1581 and 1618 and were completed by the architect Ambrosio de Vico following traces of Juan de Herrera and Juan de Orea, although with very modest material resources compared with the initial project.

With a Latin cross floor with side chapels, Baroque altarpiece stands with large twisted columns of 1671, as well as the crucified and large images of Saints Úrsula and Susana, of Alonso de Mena.

The owner, is the famous image of Our Lady of Sorrows of Torcuato Ruiz del Peral, conducted between 1750 and 1760, which is a procession from the church during Holy Week on one of the most beautiful thrones of Granada, who played in the arcades embossed silver Patio de los Leones. This Brotherhood belonged Federico García Lorca.
