Krudttårnet (powdertower) in Frederikshavn.
Krudttårnet was the central point in the fortification of Fladstrand, which was built around 1600. Besides containing powder, it was also a platform for canons.
Fredeikshavn, which at that time was named Fladstrand, wasn’t yet a town, but only a small fishing place. The ocean outside Fladstrand is the east coasts best place for large ships to seek shelter in bad weather, before they had to pass the dangerous water at the top of Skagen. During wars between Denmark and Sweden (and there were a lot), this place had great strategic importance. The famous sea hero Peter Wessel often used this place as his base before attacking the Swedes.

The picture was taken April 2002.
