Me and a canon at Akershus Fortress, Oslo.
Akershus Fortress and Castle have a long history. It was planned during the reign of King Håkon V Magnusson (1299-1319). The building of the fortress was started in 1299 and was completed under King Håkon VI Magnusson (1343-1380). During the 1500’s the fortress was burned and laid under siege several times. A new construction period started during the reign of the Danish-Norwegian King Christian IV (1588-1648), when the Fortress was given much of its present look. In 1815 Akershus was abandoned as a fortress and became public offices, jail and archive. German troops used the Akershus complex in 1940-45 during their occupation of Norway. Today it houses a royal museum and is used by the Government for representation purposes and the department of defence.
